Munnar’s Hidden Gems (7 Days / 6 Nights)

This is an in-depth immersion, not a quick visit. While a standard tour spends 2 nights in Munnar, this itinerary dedicates 4 nights (split) to the Munnar region and 2 nights to nearby Kumily (Thekkady). This allows you to go beyond the main tourist spots and explore unique, remote areas like Vattavada and Gavi.

Vattavada is a remote, cool-climate village near Munnar, often called the “vegetable garden of Kerala.” Unlike the tea estates, it’s famous for its unique terraced farms growing vegetables like strawberries, carrots, and potatoes. The scenic drive and quiet, agricultural landscape offer a completely different side of the high ranges.

Gavi is a pristine, protected forest eco-tourism spot deep inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The full-day program (which requires pre-booking) typically includes a Jeep safari, a quiet boat ride on Gavi Lake, a guided jungle trek, and visits to scenic viewpoints. It’s a must-do for serious nature lovers.

This tour involves significant hill driving on winding roads.

• Kochi to Munnar: ~4-5 hours
• Munnar to Kumily: ~4 hours
• Kumily to Vattavada (Day Trip): ~2.5-3 hours each way All drives are very scenic, but if you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to take precautions.

A moderate fitness level is recommended. You will need to be comfortable with:

• Gavi: Involves jungle trekking on uneven paths.
• Eravikulam NP: Requires walking uphill from the bus drop-off point.
• Vattavada: Involves walking through farm terraces. This tour is more active than a typical sightseeing trip.

Due to the long travel days on winding roads, the remote nature of Vattavada, and the trekking/safari rules in Gavi (which may have age restrictions), this itinerary is generally better suited for active couples, nature enthusiasts, and families with older children.

This is for logistical comfort. Vattavada has very limited accommodation. By basing yourself in Munnar and Kumily, you have access to better hotels and restaurants. The Day 6 plan (Kumily → Vattavada → Munnar) creates a scenic loop, positioning you in Munnar for a shorter, more convenient drive back to Kochi airport on Day 7.

This is a high-altitude trip. You must pack:

• Warm Layers: Sweaters, a good jacket, and shawls are essential. Mornings and evenings in Munnar, Gavi, and Vattavada are very cold.
• Comfortable Shoes: Good walking shoes or hiking boots are mandatory for Gavi and Vattavada.
• Rain Gear: A light poncho or umbrella, as mist and showers are common.
• Binoculars: For wildlife spotting in Gavi and Periyar.
